“This is a demonstration that Torontonians are outraged about the ongoing traffic deaths in our city. We call on our leaders to stop the child killings. We call on them to stop the elder killings. We demand safe streets.
Next week, Mayor Tory and Council have a chance to vote on REimagining Yonge, a reconstruction project in North York that has the potential to dramatically improve road safety along the Yonge Street corridor. There’s no denying that a vote to transform Yonge is a vote for safer streets, while a vote for the status quo is just a vote to continue the carnage.
It has been more than two years since City Council unanimously approved Toronto’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan: a plan to eliminate traffic related fatalities and serious injuries. Yet our streets remain as deadly as ever. Already, drivers have killed 16 people on Toronto’s streets this year. We need to see bold action from our Mayor and Council to transform our streets. Without that, Toronto’s Vision Zero plan is a failure.” – Friends & Families for Safe Streets.
