One of the best ways to prevent injury is to take care of your body. Being proactive and focusing on providing your body with the health and nutrition it needs can decrease the risk of bone-related injuries. It is frustrating when an injury prevents you from participating in activities that you enjoy, or makes daily tasks difficult to complete. These healthy bone tips will provide information on how to prevent injuries more efficiently.
1. Get a sufficient amount of vitamin D
It’s time to get outside and enjoy the sunlight! Vitamin D can give your mental and emotional state a healthy boost, and is also the key to healthy bones. This vitamin supports bone growth and also promotes calcium absorption. It is estimated that more than half of all adults do not receive sufficient amounts of vitamin D. If you live in an area that has a lack of sunlight, consider taking vitamin D supplements ensure that you are receiving enough vitamins, and to help protect your bones. Some other excellent sources of vitamin D include salmon, canned tuna, egg with yolk, and yogurt
2. Cut back on your caffeine intake
Coffee is often regarded as a necessary evil. Although it does contain some benefits, the high caffeine content in beverages such as coffee can be quite damaging to your health. Research has shown that high amounts of caffeine can increase your risk of breaking a bone. As a result, it is recommended that you have less than 300mg of caffeine per day. It’s also important to recognize that high amounts of caffeine can be found in many other beverages, not just coffee.
3. Consider partaking in some yoga classes
Yoga is an activity that is beneficial for your health in a variety of ways. Not only will it increase your mental and emotional health, but practicing yoga daily can also protect your skeleton. It can increase bone density, while also improving your balance, which reduces your risk of slip and falls. If you already have fairly weak bones, stick to gentler forms of yoga, such as yin or restorative yoga classes.
4. Check your medications
There are many prescription drugs that can affect bone density, such as steroids which are used to treat asthma, arthritis, depression, and digestion issues. If you are concerned about your bone health, you may want to speak with your doctor about other medications that are available to you, that won’t have a negative affect on your bones. It’s important to discuss any concerns with a trained professional to ensure that optimal health can be achieved.
5. Slow it down
If you tend to be more rambunctious, enjoy extreme sports, or simply find yourself getting hurt more often than the average person, you may want to be mindful of your movements. If you are more prone to injury, it could be worth finding gentler activities to enjoy.
