This year’s conference features a roster of leading ABI keynote speakers:
- Dr. Marc G. Berman, Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago, will discuss research findings into how spending time with nature refreshes our brain, improves attention and memory performance. His work has been cited in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker Magazine and the Boston Glove as well as other media and news outlets.
- Dr. Robin Green, will speak to the mechanisms of recovery from TBI, in particular impediments to recovery. Dr. Green is a Senior Scientist in Cognitive Rehabilitation Neurosciences at Toronto Rehab and a Canada Research Chair (II) in traumatic brain injury.
- Dr. James Malec, has been active in research and the clinical practice of brain injury rehabilitation for over 35 years. He is a Professor and Research Director at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Malec’s keynote will focus on brain rehabilitation and outcome measurement.
- Ian McCallum, father of a brain injury survivor and author of From Grave to Cradle to Now – the Healthcare Professional Edition, will share his experience “from the other side of a supposedly fatally brain injured child’s bed”.
As well as interactive, facilitated workshops featuring:
- Blaine Katzberg & Carol Farmer (Manager and Physiotherapist, respectively, from the Saskatchewan South ABI Outreach Team) & Kealee Playford (Government of Saskatchewan ABI Provincial Evaluator) will share their knowledge and learnings from the Saskatchewan ABI Partnership Program.
- Tim Godden, a Social Worker at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health with 15 years’ experience in motivational interviewing, will discuss motivational interviewing in the context of brain injury.
- Dr Michelle Keightley, a Senior Clinician Scientist at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, will present on concussion in children and youth – from identification to management.
- Jaisa Sulit will bring her previous experience as a patient, combined with her extensive training in mindfulness, to her presentation on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program. She is currently an Occupational Therapist at Bridgepoint Active Healthcare.
