Patrick Brown has been practicing for over 19 years and has dedicated his career to helping those who suffer serious and catastrophic personal injuries as well as those families who have lost a loved one due to the fault of another. He has cases throughout Ontario and is a leader in the area of personal injury law. His areas of practice include traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, fatal accidents, drowning cases, cycling injuries/ fatalities, road repair, and disability insurance claims. When not working, Patrick spends his time with his wife and two children, cycling and playing hockey. Patrick is certified as a Specialist in Civil Litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada and currently sits as Vice Chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s Insurance Section and has been selected by his peers to Best Lawyers in Canada and was recently awarded the Ontario Trial Lawyers Distinguished Service Award. He just completed the Coroners Review on Cycling Deaths in Ontario where he initiated the review, served on the Expert Panel and was recently interviewed on Canada AM regarding the recommendations. In October, 2012 Patrick was awarded with fellow lawyer Albert Koehl the 2012 Active Transportation Champion of the Year by TCAT. He is the past President of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association.  He has spoken across Canada and the United States on personal injury and advocacy and has published a number of articles and written chapters in Canada Law Books.

Patrick is a founding member and a Director of the Toronto Cyclist Union (now Cycle Toronto). He is also the organizer for the Helmets on Kids program in Toronto which provides free helmets to children in the City. He currently sits as a Director for the Ontario Safety League and is the Co-Chair with Dr. Charles Tator on the Risk and Awareness Committee for Concussions Ontario.

What others say about Patrick’s Advocacy
As a victims' advocate he has fearlessly championed the rights of the injured in both jury and non jury trials. His successes include a 4.5 million dollar trial award against the Ministry of Transportation for its failure to keep a provincial highway in a proper state of repair. In the Roberts v Morana decision, Justice J. O'Brien stated "I have not seen a case which has been better prepared or presented than this one." Patrick recently obtained an 8.6 million award for a gentleman who suffered a brain injury due to the negligence of a bad driver.

Patrick was also successful trial counsel for a five time Olympic athlete who suffered serious injuries following a car crash. In the Ishoy v. Abreau decision, Justice MacKinnon stated "Plaintiff's counsel presented their case in a focused, well-organized fashion. Their trial preparation resulted in well-prepared and focused witnesses The charts, aerial photographs, medical illustrations and demonstrative evidence both assisted the jury in understanding the medical and liability issues...Mr. Brown was lead counsel and has twelve years of experience. His closing address to the jury was dramatic, focused and effective." Patrick has had a wealth of cases where he has represented the interest of children, the elderly and over the last several years cyclists who have been killed or injured.

What has Patrick done for his profession?
After serving on their Board for many years, in 2008/2009 Patrick was elected President of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association which is the largest personal injury legal association in Canada. He also sat three years on the American Association of Justice's Council of Presidents. During his presidency he led an alliance of victims' rights groups that successfully lobbied the government to change an existing law that had significantly reduced compensation for families who lost a loved one at the hands of a bad or drunk driver. The new law was passed on September 1, 2010.

What has Patrick done to make a difference?
Patrick also devotes his free time as an activist for the promotion of safety. He is committed to preventing injuries and death by taking proactive measures to ensure accidents are eliminated. He is a founding member and a Director of the Toronto Cyclist Union (now Cycle Toronto) which promotes safe passage for cyclist on Toronto's streets.  Patrick is also the organizer for the Helmets for Kids program in Toronto which provides free helmets to children in the City. He currently sits as a Director for the Ontario Safety League which is a non for profit organization dedicated to ensuring safety comes first. Patrick currently sits as Co-Chair with Dr. Charles Tator on the Risk and Awareness Committee for Concussions Ontario.  Patrick is also a proud supporter of Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists, the United Senior Citizens of Ontario, Hoof and Cycle, 8-80 Cities and Share the Road. Patrick previously served over 5 years in the community as a pro bono legal counselor for Covenant House, Canada's largest youth shelter. He has been a member of the Canadian Paraplegic Association Wheel Chair Relay Committee for a number of years. In addition to his safety initiatives, Patrick is also the Chair and Organizer for Trial Lawyers for Veterans. TLV is a volunteer based group of lawyers who offer free services to disabled veterans in Ontario.
